Statement Lighting

If you’ve followed us for any length of time, you know that statement lighting is one of the defining characteristics of our work. Whether given a leading or supporting role, lighting selections tie everything together and elevate the overall design. Our studio is known for using bold, sculptural fixtures that feel as if they were made for the space. In fact, we often work with our lighting vendors to create custom fixtures for a truly bespoke experience.

To give you a better idea of what lighting design can do, we’re revisiting some favorite examples from our portfolio. Plus, we’ll divulge a few expert lighting selection tips to put into practice.

Set the Scene

Before starting the sourcing process, consider how you want your lighting fixture to work within the larger design. Sometimes, you want lighting that simply fades into the background and highlights another important feature, whether that’s original artwork, a handmade backsplash, or a custom vanity. Think of this as lighting featured in a “supporting role.” In other cases, you want the light fixture to be the room’s focal point—to command attention in the very best way. These “leading role” light moments often happen in the dining room, foyer, or main living space. There are occasions for lighting to make a statement and times to be subtle. The key is to determine your end goal and work backward with selections.

Consider the Unexpected

We love using sconces or pendants in unexpected places, so here’s your permission to think outside the box. In our Snowy River project, we created a cozy reading nook by adding a wall sconce that invites you to sit and stay awhile. Another example is our Bluegrouse project, featured above. The primary bathroom called for something unexpected, so we sourced Allied Maker lights featuring clean, modern lines and blown-glass globes. Not only are these sculptural sconces visually stunning, but they’re handcrafted here in the USA with artisan-level quality.

Make it Artful

If your design plans call for statement lighting, view your selection as a piece of art. Light fixtures can add color, texture, movement, and endless visual interest to a room, just like wall art. But remember: statement lighting isn’t limited to grand chandeliers. Even well-appointed floor lamps or wall sconces can bring such an artful presence to a space. Lighting should always be chosen with intention, especially when it’s the focal point of a room.

Invest in Quality

Now that we’ve shared a few tips for selecting lighting, we wanted to introduce you to our most trusted sources. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but we know you’ll be inspired just by viewing any one of these light maker’s handcrafted selections:

We always advise our clients to invest in high-quality lighting or to even consider commissioning something custom. There’s nothing quite like a one-of-a-kind light fixture to deliver character and make a home feel completely personal. After all, that’s what great design is all about.
